Invitation in Hebrew to the Annual Meeting of the Israeli David-Horodok and Stolin Organizations

The annual meeting of the Israeli David-Horodok and Stolin Organization took place last week in Tel Aviv and according to committee member Sinai Zilber, the event was a great success with 112 descendants and families in attendance. We anticipate that in future years, Stoliners and David-Horodokers world-wide will be able to Zoom in for part of this annual gathering in Tel Aviv.

Participants enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and conversation followed by Motti Shaffer, who spoke about the five organization members who passed away in the last 3 years. Sinai Zilber then gave a presentation on the trip that he, Motti and Alex Gizunterman took to David-Horodok in September of 2023 for the dedication of the Holocaust monument in the town square. Dinner followed with entertainment by singer Shlomit Aharon, who represented Israel in the Eurovision song contest in 1981.

We hope you enjoy these photos from the event:

Invitation to the Inauguration Ceremony for the New Holocaust Monument in David-Horodok.

This Wednesday, September 20, at 2:00 PM Belarus time (7 AM NY, 8 AM Argentina, 2 PM Israel), the inauguration ceremony for the new Holocaust monument in David-Horodok will be held. The ceremony will be broadcast on Zoom and we hope you’ll join us at the link below.

The sculpture of wood and granite honors the memories of the Jews who perished there and was designed by local artisan Sergey Zhilevich. It was completed in 2020, but due to COVID, the dedication was postponed.

Attending the ceremony will be a delegation of three members of the Israeli Descendants Organization of David-Horodok and surrounding area. This monument project was established and funded by the initiative of the Israeli David-Horodokers with the participation of the David-Horodoker Organization in the US.

The sculpture not only marks the path to the mass grave site, but also relays the Jewish history of the town. It includes a carving of a father and son on one side and a mother and daughter on the other with the inscription in English, Hebrew and Russian: “In memory of the 500-year-old Jewish community of David-Horodok, brutally annihilated by the Germans 1941-1942.”

Игорь Краверский of Minsk recently posted these memories from September 20, 2023, of the ceremony after the inauguration of the new Holocaust monument in the town square in David-Horodok. These photos were taken at the grave site monument in the forest, 6 kilometers from the town center. Kaddish was said there for the martyrs of the Holocaust. In attendance was a delegation of three from Israel: Alex Gizunterman, Motti Shaffer and Sinai Zilber. Many thanks to Valery Vi for sharing this with us.

“On September 20, 2023 at the end of the opening of the monument “The Jewish Community of David – Gorodka – Victim of the Holocaust”, guests from Israel, members of the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities headed to the Hinovsk landmark, which is located 6 kilometers from David -Gorodoka. There, on a large site, in the form of a red menorah, with a family of large concrete, hexagonized stylized candles (the author of the memorial was architect Leonid Levin), an impromptu memorial ceremony was held where the speakers said that the tragedy of the Holocaust, which claimed six million lives, must never be repeated. After the ceremony, Rabbi Moshe Fima offered a memorial prayer. The flowers have been laid. Our memory is alive. Lest we forget.”

On September 22, 2022, 80 years after the mass murder of the Jewish communities of David-Horodok and Stolin by the Nazis and their collaborators, the Israeli association of descendants conducted a memorial service at the Cholon Cemetery in Israel (בית עלמין חולון). The cemetery is located in Bat Yam, on the central coastal strip just south of Tel Aviv.

These tombstones were placed by the first generation who arrived in Israel after the war and established the descendant organization there. Thank you Sinai Zilber for sending us these photographs.

“In memoriam of the Holy Souls of David-Horodok and its neighborhood. Perished in the Holocaust 1941-1942. Remembrance day: 17 Av. Soil from the cemetery of David-Horodok and its neighborhood is buried here”.
